Weight Loss Foods: A Break from Weight Loss Fads

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Kenny Yong If skipping meals, starvation or fad dieting wont do the trick, what will? Simple, even those who need no dieting would agree with this. You only have to maintain healthy food habits and refrain from foods that will make you gain weight. It’s not always what you eat but also those foods that you don’t eat. Because we are constantly bombarded with processed foods, 40% of, which are daily consumed, we have no other choice but to prepare them for meal. We don’t need to but we can’t help it. They make cooking faster- a great time saver at that. They are easier to prepare and take little effort in order to present a decent meal. However, the contents of processed foods are more likely to deliver us to danger, on some extent to our deaths. There is wisdom in eating natural foods, those that are unadulterated with secretly incorporated chemicals. We often hear of the phrase balanced diet. And we all know how balanced should they be. However, because of our uncontrollable desire to eat sophisticated foods, we Americans have found ourselves caught with these three main problems: obesity, heart attack and unhealthiness. All because we choose not to take life easier and to eat more inappropriate foods. Since we are fast-paced lifestyle oriented, we find more comfort in things that offer us quicker results. We turn to processed foods because they are easier to prepare, we drive our way to offices because we can’t afford to lose time by walking and we welcome fad dieting because they seem to provide a quick fix for our health problems and bulging waistlines. While we all recognize the magic that they display, we still cannot bear admit to ourselves that they only offer fantasies. There is no such thing as fad dieting or magical dieting. All are frauds and should anyone fall to their traps, he or she must quickly release himself or else permanent damage may be incurred in his or her system. So that brings us again to our main question, what will do the trick? We eat cakes, we love candy bars, we drink lots of creamed shakes, what else would you add? After thinking about all things that you usually eat, what else are you living behind? Yes, the foods that you forget to eat. And that’s the key. If you cannot think of alfalfa sprouts as your main dish for dinner, or cannot agree with cabbage soup, then eat your favorite foods. But eat them at your own risks. Well, risks are risks and there are only two way to treat them-take them or leave them. This time we will take them. You need not imagine that you are eating while shedding off some fat. Because you can actually do it. There are weight loss foods that you may try to help you loose cell fats and body fats. Thinking that this is just another magical diet, please judge later. As weight loss foods, the following are effective in making you feel full, cleanse your system and prevent you from being prone to certain diseases. Such weight loss foods include soybeans, garlic oil, fresh green salads, liquid oils such as sunflower oil, peanut oil and corn oil, a number of citrus fruits especially lemons and oranges, apples, and grapes. All have individual properties that usually lead to the elimination of fats from the body and in boosting the metabolism. There is nothing new in them. But are we particularly keen to weight loss and life-enhancing effects? The Cost of Giving Up

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Nick Arrizza, M.D. I’m sure at times of deep crisis many of you have considered thoughts of “giving up”. What is the cost to you of entertaining such thoughts? Well as one client with a progressively deteriorating illness I was working with stated “it’s like having one foot out the back door”. So what does it mean to “have one foot out the back door”? Well it means that “YOU” are not fully in your body! Now if “YOU” are the life giving force or energy that your body, out of necessity, requires to sustain it in a healthy and functional state (i.e. the way that a plant requires the life giving energy of the Sun to sustain it) what do you think will happen to your body if you are not fully in it? Well a plant eventually dies without the Sun. In the same way your body will die without you! So when are you not “fully” in your body? Well when you for instance: 1) Entertain giving up, 2) When you dislike your body or yourself for some reason, and 3) When you choose to harbor toxic things in your bio-field and therefore your body. Where are you left when your body is not fully healthy and functional? Well in a state of crisis. In fact, I would say that “all” crises in your life are the result of you not being fully in your body all the time. In other words, by choosing “life” i.e. to be in your body, you are likely to ward off any crisis. That is because, by choosing to be fully in your body always, your body will experience a strength and resilience you have likely never known before. So, where would you like to have your two feet? If you would like to know more you may wish to visit the web site in my bio below. Dr. Nick Arrizza is trained in Chemical Engineering, Business Management & Leadership, Medicine and Psychiatry. How to Grow Tomatoes!

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Terry Blackburn Growing Tomatoes Most of the tomatoes grown in Britain are grown in greenhouses yet there are several excellent varieties that are specifically for growing outside. The tomato plant requires a growing temperature of 60 F. In some of our cold, wet, summers especially the ones we frequently have in the North, the crops grown outside are often disappointing and can be attacked by potato blight disease. Without sunshine the fruits will not ripen but even without a greenhouse you can still grow beautiful, flavoursome tomatoes using one of the portable mini poly-houses. This type is of simple construction, a tubular metal frame that can be easily fitted together and therefore can be just as easily dismantled when not in use. The plastic cover fits snugly over the frame and is ideal for giving a little warmth and protection when the weather is poor. If you are handy you can construct a similar type of frame from timber and this with a plastic sheeting cover will work almost as well. Tomato plants can be purchased during May or you can raise your own from seed under glass. This will give you the opportunity to experiment and try some of the newer or very-coloured tomatoes that the seed companies have on offer. Those, which you intend to grow outside, must be one of the outside growing varieties to be successful. Though seeds can be sown out-of-doors it is generally not a very satisfactory process unless they have shelter and warmth. If you purchase plants make sure that they are well-hardened, sturdy, dark green specimens. Soil Preparation Tomatoes do not mind if the soil is light or heavy but it must contain plenty of organic manure. If you are growing the tomatoes outside they must be in a warm, sheltered position in a sunny aspect. In April add plenty of well-rotted compost or manure to the soil. Sowing in the Greenhouse The seed can be sown anytime between February and May they should be 2 in. apart in trays of seed compost covered with a sheet of glass until germination. Give as much light as possible, after about 28 days, pot up into 3 in. pots in John Innes potting compost No.1. Planting Out in the Greenhouse In the greenhouse the plants may be grown in the border soil, or in pots of good compost. A popular method of growing these plants is to place pots that have had their bottoms removed onto 6 in. deep bed of ashes or coarse sand and shingle. The ashes or single will hold a large quantity of water so the plants do not suffer from drying out as they often do in ordinary pots. Add good compost such as John Innes No 3 potting compost, into the bottomless pots and plant in the young tomato seedlings. Liquid feeding is applied to the compost at 10- day intervals from the time the first truss has set. Plain water is applied only to the ash or shingle base. Sowing in Frames Sow the seeds in April in 3-in. (76mm) pots filled with John Innes seed compost. Put three seeds, in. apart and in. (6mm) deep in the centre of each pot, these can be thinned down to one per pot later. Tomato seeds germinate at temperatures between 59 to 68 deg F. (15 to 20 deg C.) Keep the pots in the frame until the end of May. Planting Out in the Open In readiness for planting out, level the ground raking in fish manure with 10 per cent potash content or a complete fertilizer at the rate of 4 or 5 oz. (120g - 150g) to the sq. yd. The main planting is done in late May in the south and early June in the north when the chance of frost has passed. Disturb the roots as little as possible when planting, make a hole with a trowel and plant the soil with the root ball carefully. Plant so that the top of the ball is about in. below the level of the soil. Firm in the plants then push a strong 4-ft. (120cm) bamboo canes into the ground at the side of the plant. Sowing in the Open The seeds are sown in May, three seeds in. (12mm) deep in their growing position then cover with a glass bell or a clear plastic, 5 litre mineral bottle using just the top 2/3rds of the bottle, after the bottom part has been removed. Each sowing must be 15 in. (381mm) apart in rows 2- ft. (75cm) apart. Later the seedlings can be thinned down to one plant per station if necessary. General Care As soon as the first truss of flowers have appeared, give a liquid feed that has a10 per cent potash content once a week throughout the season. Watering regularly will prevent the skins from splitting. Keep only a single stem on each plant by removing the side shoots, which appear at the point where the leaves join the main stem. Make sure that you only remove the side shoots, making sure that you do not damage the incipient flower truss. The shoots can be simply pinched out between finger and thumbnail, but I think less accidental damaged is caused if a knife is used to do the job. As the plants grow, tie the stems to the bamboo sticks with soft, green cotton twine or raffia. Make sure that the twine or raffia is not too tight so that it does not cut into the stem as it grows. The best method is to wrap the twine or raffia twice around the bamboo then put a loop around the stem and tie it to the stick with care. Remove the top inch of the growing point of each plant during the first week of August as the plants stop growing and cropping when the days draw shorter. When the top growth is removed, the sap will be then directed to swell the already formed fruits rather than to make any further growth. Continue to remove the side shoots. Do not remove the leaves until they turn yellow: they manufacture the elaborated sap that feeds the fruits helping it to mature. Harvesting Remove the fruits as they ripen. At the end of the season if you have green tomatoes still on the plants, they can be removed and ripened indoors on a windowsill or they can be made into delicious chutney to rival any that can be bought from a supermarket. Green Tomato Chutney 2lb (0.9kg) green tomatoes 2lb (0.9kg) tart green apples 2 large onions 1 (0.47lt) pint of Cider vinegar 1lb (0.45kg) brown sugar oz. (15g) salt oz. (7.5g) Szechwan pepper Juice of 2 lemons 2 crushed chillies Method Peel and core the apples, remove skins from tomatoes by dropping them into boiling water, chop all the ingredients and mix in sugar and spices. Add vinegar, and simmer gently with the lid on the pan until the ingredients have thickened. When cooled put into warm sterilized jars and seal. Terry Blackburn. Let Bad Credit Payday Loans Entertain You

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Taylor]Peter Taylor We always think that we can at least take care of the small expenses that come our way, like unexpected car bill, unexpected medical bill, various grocery and utility bills or any other bill, which requires quick paying off so that they are not accumulated over a period. And that applies to everyone whether the person is of a good credit history or of bad credit history. What bad credit history implies is that a person who wants the loan has a poor credit rating or poor credit worthiness, and this is the result of the failure of the person to pay his previous loan dues on time or in proper way or both. These petty expenses can be quite irritating if they are not dealt with properly. That is why it is advisable to take the help of the bad credit payday loans. Bad credit payday loans are loans, which help to take care of the short-term expenses. What people generally argue against the bad credit payday loans is that the expenses are too low and can be paid without any trouble to the person who has to incur them. That can be the case but what bad credit payday loan brings to the table is something different. The loans are generally considered a better option than breaking into the current or savings account. Along with that, there are features of these loans that make these loans more user friendly. Features such as: Considering the range of the loan, the loans are available without the pledging of the security. The loans are available up to 1500. The loans are available at reasonable interest rates. The loans are approved in a few working days. The security of the data i.e. the confidentiality is also maintained. People with bad credit history get a chance to improve on their credit score and get more beneficial terms for the loans if they need it next time. The borrowers are not obliged to go through any credit checks or any other additional formalities. These features along with being more user friendly also allow more fluid approach towards the utilization of the loan. This can result in getting better performance from the loan to its suitors. The last step that any loan borrower should know about is how to apply for the loan. The process is simple and easy to follow. All the borrowers need to do is to go online and search for lenders who deal with the similar loans. And follow the links that are available for the borrowers. The steps will finally lead the borrowers towards the application of the loan. Peter Taylor is a senior financial analyst at LoansX with an acumen for finance and insurance. Whiskey and Cigars: Pairing Life’s Luxuries

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Jennifer Jordan Like two peas in a pod of the luxury world, cigars and whiskey can often be found together. Both known as two of the finer things in life, when used jointly, they work to enhance the drinking and smoking experience. This is particularly true when the drink being consumed is single malt scotch. Known as the Cuban cigar of the whiskey world, single malt scotch is the perfect drink to take out for a smoke. What is Single Malt Scotch? While many people know what single malt scotch entails, some people may not be completely clear. But, in actuality, the concept of single malt scotch is singularly simple: single malt scotch is essentially barely-malt whiskey made in Scotland that comes from only one distillery, allowing it to carry distinct aromas and flavors. In terms of whiskeys, single malt scotch is the most laudable: the Scottish have the title of worlds greatest whiskey in the bagpipe. Why are Cigars a Good Fit with Single Malt Scotch? Cigars and single malt scotch have similar mantras: they both invoke specifics of the land and the maker; tobacco plants and barley both aim to remember their roots. To demonstrate this, cigars from different regions have different flavors: a Dominican Republic cigar will taste different than a cigar from Honduras. This is because each cigar aims to capture the distinct taste of the land and of the tobacco manufacturer, leaving no two cigar brands alike. Single Malt Scotch is the only type of whiskey that possesses this same ability; giving drinkers a cup of originality. Some whiskeys journey through so many distilleries that they - like a whiskey that has drank too much of itself - forget who they are. This results in a whiskey with flavors that are vague, with little semblance to the roots of their homeland. Single Malt Scotch, however, stands out because it is processed through a single distillery. In addition, while other whiskeys can contain mixtures of corn, wheat, and unmalted barley, single malt scotch uses malted barely as the sole grain ingredient. This, ultimately, succeeds in instilling single malt scotch with the true taste of Scotland. What Kinds of Cigars Compliment Single Malt Scotch? There are a variety of cigars that compliment certain whiskeys, as if telling them that they have nice ryes. With single malt scotch, however, there are certain cigars for which this feat is tailor made; there are certain cigars that go better with single malt scotch than with nearly anything else. There are two main routes to take when complimenting single malt scotch. The first route couples a mild cigar with a mild single malt scotch while the other route couples a strong cigar with a strong single malt scotch. Mild Cigar and Mild Single Malt When pairing a mild cigar with a mild single malt, the outcome isnt just a bunch of mildness: the mild cigar and mild single malt wont cause an urge to meditate among those who consume them. Instead, the mildness of each works together to enhance each other, resulting in a very unique experience. A Highland Park single malt scotch and a La Flor Dominicana are examples of two things that go well together, tag teaming each other to create a truly luxurious experience. Highland Park scotches are known for being smooth, balanced, and filled with overtones of honey. A La Flor Dominicana is a mild cigar with anything but mild flavor, filled with the tastes of the Dominican Republic. When consumed together, a Highland Park and a La Flor Dominicana work together to enhance the experience, drawing out the best attributes of the tobacco and the whiskey. Strong Cigar and Strong Single Malt Pairing together a strong cigar with a strong single malt may seem like asking for trouble, as if each item will try to be stronger than the other, ultimately arm wrestling to see who has to pay the bar tab. However strong each item is, when paired together, they actually work with each other, complimenting each others strengths and erasing weaknesses. A nice strong scotch is the Lagavulin Single Malt. Characterized by peatiness and iodine overtones, the Lagavulin couples well with the Joya De Nicaragua Antano 1970, a very full bodied, robust cigar. When this scotch and this cigar are consumed together, the result is a very flavorful, potent, and, above all, smoky experience. For this reason, if this experience could talk, it would sound like Beau Arthur. What Kind of Cigars Contrast with Single Malt Scotch? On the other end of the spectrum, there are a variety of cigars that contrast with single malt scotch, hitting heads to offset each other. Because these cigars and whiskeys have different attributes - putting the weak with the strong and vice versa - it may seem like these pairings will result in some sort of rivalry: the cigars and the scotch brawl, the fight ensuing until the cigars are crushed and the scotch tipped over. But, in actuality, the contrast works rather well. There are two main routes to take when contrasting with single malt scotch. The first route couples a strong cigar with a mild single malt scotch while the other route couples a mild cigar with a strong single malt scotch. Strong Cigar and Mild Single Malt Pairing together a strong cigar with a mild single malt has the ability to take away from the pungency of the cigar, arming the single malt with a little more gusto. This results not in the cigar losing its flavor, but in the scotch becoming enhanced. As both a full body and mild body meet in the middle, the result is sure to please about anybody, whether they themselves are full or mild.. A very mild single malt scotch is a Dalwhinnie. Known for being slightly peaty and very aromatic, the Dalwhinnie is about as smooth as they come. Its full of sweet flavor and tastes a bit like its coated in honey. A Dalwhinnie goes perfectly with a La Aurora 100 Anos. Made from very rare Corjo tobacco, these cigars are full of flavor and body. When taken together, the Dalwhinnie and La Aurora work to provide an experience that is strong and mild in all the right places. Mild Cigar and Strong Single Malt A mild cigar can use a good strong single malt, a strong drink that can provide enhancement, smoothness, and open the humidor when the lids on too tight. Like pairing a strong cigar with a mild single malt, the attributes of both enhance each other, like opposites that attract, pulling the best characteristics out. The Laphroaig single malt scotch is among the strongest flavored scotches around. While these are typically aged for ten years, some rare ones are as old as 40. While some people have found that the peaty aroma of the whiskey is enhanced by adding a bit of water, others find that it is enhanced by smoking a Macanudo. Macanudo cigars may as well be synonymous with the word mellow as they fill the smoker with a sense of smoothing calm. When consumed together, the Laphroaig and the Macanudo work together to supply the consumer with a mellow peatiness. Overall, these two things go together as well as any dynamic duo: Laurel and Hardy, Laverne and Shirley, Cigar and Single Malt. While some cigars complement single malt scotch, others contrast with it. But, both equations equal satisfaction. Allowing the true flavors of each others lands, cigars and scotch single malt work to bring together the best of all cultures involved, leaving the world a little smaller, and a little more luxurious. Why Did God Destroy New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina?

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Lance Winslow Many people believe that God was real angry at mankind and got a wild hair up his butt and sent Hurricane Katrina into the Gulf Shore and New Orleans to teach people a lesson. But if that were so what was the lesson? Hard to say really and if it was a lesson did the little humans learn anything? It appears they did not. Humans in their ultimate defiance are rebuilding the city under sea level as before and carrying on with Marti Gras as if nothing ever happened. Thus saying in affect you cant beat us Mother Nature? Well, perhaps not this time, but this will not be the last time Mother Nature sends a big one towards the New Orleans area, there will be more, that is a given. Now then will it be God who is doing this or will it simply be a serious of cycles and events which have gone on since the beginning of time, both before man took claim and built the city and in the periods following like we have just witnessed and may even witness again in our life times. In reality it does not matter why it is happening or who is causing it, as the fact is that Mother Nature is much bigger than you. You see humans are small little creatures living on the surface of the planet and they really are insignificant to the over all cycles and events that rule our Earth. Choosing Your Major

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

By David Lithman So you’re an incoming freshman or an underclassman who is still undecided and the question everyone asks you “What’s your major?” is getting on your last nerves. I’ve heard it a thousand times, and trust me, the only question you will hate being asked more than “What’s your major?” is “What do you want to do after graduation?”. But we’ll get into the graduation question some other day. For now let’s concentrate on choosing your major. I went to freshman orientation at the University of Florida not knowing what I wanted to do with my life (and honestly, 6 months after graduation and working in the real world, I still don’t know the answer). Like many of you, I felt pressure to give the advisors an answer. I told them Civil Engineering. Bad mistake on my part. Never Never Never pick engineering as your major unless you are dead sold on it. I was stupid and signed up for a year’s worth of Calculus and Chemistry. But the good thing about college and choosing your major is that you can always change it. You can change your major seven times if you want. I only changed my major twice, which is probably about normal. What is not normal is picking a major and sticking to it. You are in the vast minority if you go all four years with the major you picked at orientation, but kudos to you for sticking with it. Try to evaluate what you like and enjoy doing. If you love computers, research your school’s computer science degrees. If your passion is in sports, pursue a sport management degree (that’s what I did). If you love kids, by all means declare yourself an education major. But do not feel that you are stuck with it. Explore the programs and keep your options open. Choosing a major does not necessarily mean you will land a job in that field. I earned a Bachelor’s in Sport Management and here I am building a web page and writing articles about college life. Your degree does not limit you career opportunities. Unless you choose a very specific degree, like software engineering or accounting, your career opportunities are very open. Even with specific degrees you can find jobs in areas unrelated. When it comes to picking a minor or going after a second degree, try to pick something relevant to your field of study. To accompany my sport management degree, I earned a business management minor. Both compliment each other. Do not get a computer science bachelor’s and an entomology minor. They are completely irrelevant to each other and won’t be impressive on your resume (unless you have a true love for bugs, then stick to something relevant). The same goes with double majoring. Don’t double major just for bragging rights. It will be a big waste of time. If you love the challenge, love studying, and hard work then explore the option of getting a second degree. Do not go straight into orientation with that go go attitude of “Oh my god I’m going to be a double major in bimolecular chemistry and nuclear microbiology and I’m going to take all honors courses so I can graduate in two and a half years”. It doesn’t work like that, and you won’t make it unless your name is Doogie Howser. Wait a semester or two before declaring a second major. Tip #1. Don’t pick your major because it’s what your mother or father do. Tip #2. If you are unsure at orientation, don’t feel pressured into choosing a major right away. It’s ok to be undeclared for a semester or two. Tip #3. Be happy with your degree. If you hate the classes you are in, think about making a change. Tip #4. Don’t declare a second major right away. Tip #5. Pick a minor that compliments your major. Tip #6. Pick a major in a field of study you enjoy. If you enjoy reading books about Art, then look into being an Art History major. If Art bores you to death, don’t be an Art major. Tip #7. Take advantage of your school’s career resource center. (I never did, and boy did I regret it when it took me 4 months to find a job). If you have any comments or questions, please feel free to email me at collegesos@yahoo.com or visit my website at http://collegesos.blogspot.com/ I am a recent graduate of the University of Florida. I currently work full-time, but it is my desire to help incoming and current college students with all aspects in their lives. My goal is to advise students not to make the mistakes I did and to help give them a better college experience. 8 Tips to Identify Antiques

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Martin Swinton Want to know if your furniture is as old as you might think? Here are some tips to help you identify an antique. 1. Patina An old table will have a rich, beautiful finish. Decades of polishing and exposure to the elements create patina. Check underneath a table. On an older table, the appearance of the wood will be much different underneath than on the top. The underside will be lighter because it has not been polished or had use. This is a clue to advanced age. 2. Handmade Look for handmade furniture. Antique furniture was hand made by craftsmen. Watch for uneven carving; it indicates hand made workmanship. Machine made furniture has identical, perfect carving. A set of chairs is great to check for it. If all the carving and detail on all the chairs is absolutely identical, it was machine made, and not so old. 3. Veneer Look for thick veneers on wood. Veneer has been used for hundreds of years and is not necessarily a bad thing. However, older veneer is thicker than modern veneer and it was glued onto wood. Newer veneers are very thin. Modern manufacturing methods allow for thinner cuts. Modern veneers are often glued onto particleboard or base woods. 4. Signature Look for a makers signature. Newer, mass-produced furniture would tend to be signed by a craftsman. A signature helps to date an item, determine value and provide provenance. 5. Mortise-and-tenon Construction Watch for construction methods, mortise-and-tenon is a method where two pieces of wood are cut like a jigsaw puzzle to fit together without nails or glue. This technique is used to compile the overall structure of a piece. It denotes excellent craftsmanship and helps to identify an antique. 6. Locks Look for locks fitted with brass keys on drawers, desks etc. Often the lock makers name is clear. This name is a good reference point to determine age and value. 7. Dovetail Joints Dovetailing is a method of construction used to put together drawers, blanket boxes etc. It is also method where two pieces of wood are cut like a jigsaw puzzle to fit together without nails or glue Handmade 18th century dovetails are large and uneven. Machine-made dovetails are thin and even. 8. Nails Look for square pegs and hand forged nails. Furniture made during 17th and 18th century used square pegs. Hand forged nails also indicate an antique. You can tell hand forged nails because they are very irregular in size and shape. Seeing construction with a Phillips screw should make you think that an item is not so old. Martin Swinton owns Take-A-Boo Emporium, an antique shop located in Toronto, Canada. Small Business Finance

By Michelle Yanik Raising capital is a basic need for all businesses. It is not always easy. Small business financial planning is crucial. Lack of funding is often the reason many businesses never get off the ground and the reason most business fail. It is not easy to find a small business start up loan. There are several sources for a small business loan and you should consider all options. Personal Savings: Most often start-up funds come from ones own savings. Friends/Relatives: Many people approach friends and relatives with their business ideas in hopes of gaining investors. Some choose this option over the bank because often the loan is repaid without interest of at a very low interest rate. Banks: The most common source for capital is a bank. You must prove to the lender that your business is viable and well thought-out. If you are unprepared the lender will consider you a high risk and deny your small business start-up loan. You should know exactly how much you need. Explain why you need it and how you will repay it. Youll want to convince the lender that you are a good credit risk. Venture Capital: You will gain the funding you need from a venture capital firm in exchange for equity or part ownership. Your business plan must demonstrate your ability to make the business work. You can learn about the venture capital industry and find regional organizations at the National Venture Capital Association. You must accurately estimate your business costs for up to the first year. First, identify all expenses required for start-up. Some are one time fees and others will be ongoing fees like utilities and inventory. Next, determine which are essential versus optional. You should only include those that are necessary for start-up. Those essential expenses can then be divided into two categories. Youll encounter these terms over and over again, they are Fixed Costs and Variable Costs. Fixed costs include insurance, utilities, rent and administrative expenses. Variable costs are things like inventory and shipping expenses. Know your fixed and variable costs well. Use a worksheet to list all your costs and help you estimate your total need for start-up. Thats good small business financial planning. Shining Shuttle to the Stars or Long Black Train to Hell

By Michael Bresciani The power to wage and win wars may be to the minds of some what makes a nation a super power but after a closer examination of history it can be seen that military victories dont go very far to keep a nation at the peak of power. History says it is a nations moral fortitude alone that keeps it at the top. Obviously there are those who dont believe this and there is even more who think it is pure folly just to entertain such an archaic thought. Throughout history the strongest nations were often brought down by a mere device. To wit, ancient Babylon seemed impregnable with its massive walls that could hold six chariots side by side on the tops of the wall. By a simple device, the diverting of the waters of the Euphrates River the Persians were able to wade in under the walls of the city and bring the inhabitants to their knees. The Persians prided themselves in their power to swarm over a city with an overwhelming army and flatten all resistance. If a city of one hundred thousand people was faced with an army of millions often they gave up without a fight. Again a simple device called the Greek Phalanx pulled the plug for Persia. A simple formation of tiered spearmen effectively ripped up the blitzkrieg like armies of Persia. Superior strategies and the brilliant tactics of Alexander the Great laid waste to the Persians and for a time it would seem that no one could topple the mighty Greek empire. Enter Rome with an army of superbly trained men. A single Roman soldier was trained to hold off up to twelve men at a time. The idea of training men for warfare reached its peak at that time in history and remains to this day. Rome eventually fell from its perch but not because its famed armies lost their punch. It fell because it could not withstand its own success. With material goods in abundance and freedom to do anything that entered the imagination, the Romans gave themselves to the hot pursuit of pleasures and indulgence. Romes reputation for licentiousness became a stink throughout the world. Within Rome the shredding moral fabric traversed the entire social spectra affecting Roman citizens from the lowest to the highest. Near the end of the empire the best seats of the Roman senate could be had for a pittance and the emperors throne had earned a reputation for shame that has far out lasted the fame of any particular emperor. Germany underestimated the British, Bonaparte had his Waterloo and the list is almost endless. To make the list comprehensive would take volumes but the lesson is singular and takes only a sentence. The power of a nation is not its armies. In the modern era it would seem that a burgeoning economy or great technological advances are commonly accepted as evidence of a nations superpower status. But since stock markets crash over night and space shuttles are brought down by a few missing tiles it is presumptuous to put all our trust in these things. The unseen substance of moral power still holds center stage in any assessment of a nations strength. It cant be readily seen or handled much like air but everyone knows what happens when air begins to rise to the level of a category five hurricane or a tornado. For America it is obviously a combination of all these elements that gave us the idea that we are a superpower. With the abuse of our hard won freedoms on the rise and the flaunting of all that is raunchy by our film industry and media it seems we are on country singer Josh Turners Long Black Train rather than NASAs gleaming shuttle to the stars. There’s a long black train Coming down the line Feeding off the souls that are lost and crying Rails of sin only evil remain Watch out brother for that long black train Look to the heavens You can look to the skies You can find redemption, staring back into your eyes There is protection and there is peace in the same burn in your ticket for that long black train Cause there’s victory in the lord I say Victory in the Lord Cling to the Father and his holy name and don’t go riding on that long black train There’s a engine there on that long black train making you wonder if your ride is worth the pain he’s just a waitin’ on your heart to say let me ride on that long black train But you know there’s victory in the lord I say victory in the lord Cling to the father and his holy name and don’t go riding on that long black train Well I can hear the whistle from a mile away it sounds so good but I must stay away that train is a beauty making everybody stare but its only destination is the middle of nowhere But you know there’s victory in the lord I say victory in the Lord Cling to the Father and his holy name and don’t go ridin’ on that long black train I said cling to the father and his holy name and don’t go ridin’ on that black train yes watch out brother for that long black train the devils a ridin’ that long black train. Have Americans lost sight of where the battle is, is the real army We the People, wandering around in a fog unable to even see where the enemy is? It is looking that way more and more as we head down history row. Even with an all volunteer army whose morale is very high there are those who are in a rush to bring the men back from Iraq and Afghanistan before our objectives have been realized. Perhaps Americans have gotten the battlegrounds a bit mixed up and instead of thinking the defeat of terrorism is important they now believe in the medias constant call to fight another war. Americans are called upon daily through millions of advertisements to fight the good fight against dirt, stains and germs. We plan for our happy retirements and talk of future personal security by building strong financial portfolios while we indulge in every whim and fancy without regard to rising world threats from terrorists, fanatical regimes and nuclear powered dictators with little or no conscience. The liberal factions of our society seem to see only an actual physical invasion of our shores as a real threat. They seem to have taken the events of 9/11 seriously but not for very long. Did someone announce a truce between us and the terrorists? The proponents of liberalism it would seem have heard a different trumpet blowing and raced off to the wrong war. Preachers and prophets are accorded equal status with used car salesmen and anyone who thinks times were better before is taken for a sentimental nostalgia buff. Being cool is nothing but another word for aloof. America is aloof if it thinks that moral power is only a nostalgic allusion to our past or a pious preachers platitude that has no more practical value than the long forgotten debut of the hula hoop. In fact, our moral strength is all weve got! Faith in God, love for our country and its founding principles and the love of our neighbor are not nostalgic niceties to look back on. They are the only hope of a reasonably good future we have, and thats a big Cajun guarantee. The Bible is very clear on the subject and we will call upon a passage of Holy Writ here to finalize the matter. The verses are taken from the prophet Jeremiah, chapter 17 verses 5 through 8. Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD. For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
