Student Safety Tips

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Frank G Getting an education theses days is tuff enough. Between paying tuition, bills, school supplies and hours of studying, students have to watch out for their safety as well! Students cant count on campus security as they never seem to be around when needed, they just cant be expected to watch over so many students and guarantee everyones safety. If you live on campus, be careful who you let in your dorm. Be very weary of strangers or people you just met. Many can seem very nice and sweet but yet have alternative motives. Also be very careful of who follows you into the building. If you are walking alone many will take this chance to follow you into your dorm, so be very aware of your surroundings. Lock your bedroom door even if you are only going into your hallway. Did you know about half of all burglaries happen because a door or windows are left open? If you’re in a private home or apartment make sure all the windows are locked down and the front door is always locked. It doesnt matter if youre only going to be out a few minutes out or close by. Always lock up! You never know who might be watching! Muggers, burglars and rapists are always looking for an easy target. You dont want to be one of them, always try to be in groups at night. If you cant be with friends going home, youre probably better off getting a taxi or staying over a friends home. When using ATM machines try to be in a group of friends or trusted people. If you can, any time you need to use ATMS try to get your cash early on. The early the better, less chance of getting cornered and robbed in the dark of night. So its best to use ATMS in groups and during the day if possible. Put your debit card and cash away quickly and always be aware of who’s around you and your surroundings. Needles to say never give anybody your pin number or write it down where someone can take it. Everyone is more vulnerable to crime or being abused in some sort or manner, when they’ve been drinking. If you’re planning a big night out partying, arrange beforehand a way to get home safely, with friends, or in a taxi. Be careful of whom you accept drinks from, men and women can have their drinks spiked for different reasons. Keep an eye on your drink as much as possible with strangers. I am not saying you have to be paranoid or anything like that; just use common sense and all should be well. How to Make the Ultimate Terrarium

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Will Kalif A terrarium is a beautiful project to make and to take care of but if you are ambitious you might want to make the ultimate terrarium. And this doesnt come down to gardening skills. It comes down to a little bit of thought and a lot of creativity. Here are some great ideas for making your terrarium into the ultimate terrarium. The Theme is King The most appealing thing you can do with a terrarium is to make it theme based. People will very much enjoy a terrarium if it has a very recognizable theme. And this will further your creativity because it will force you to really think about what you are going to put in it other than the plants. Some themes to consider: Desert Theme: This is a popular theme for a terrarium because it looks very exotic with cactus, colorful sand, a variety of stones and even a lizard or two. Carnivorous theme: Carnivorous plants like Pitcher plants or Venus fly traps are very appealing because they have an exotic look. Jungle theme: This is a very lush and attractive theme and to look good it will be a very dense collection of exotic and colorful plants. Tell a Story with your Terrarium This is a technique that is very effective in making your terrarium special. You tell a story with your terrarium by adding small figurines such as faeries, dragons, knights or princesses. Try to think of a frozen moment in time like the moment before a knight will discover the lair of a dragon. Or the moment before someone will throw a coin into a wishing well. Building and adding those extras that really make it special This is where you can get really creative with your terrarium and if you have chosen a theme or a story you can really fulfill your terrariums vision with extras like a miniature waterfall, an underground lair, a rock cave, a small pond with goldfish, or even electric lights or a working windmill. Think about the enclosure for your terrarium One of the most dramatic ways to make your terrarium appealing is to build it inside a unique or beautiful container. This can be anything from a distinctly shaped wine bottle to a fish tank or almost anything at all. I once saw a terrarium that was made inside an old television. All the internal parts were taken out and a glass front was put on it. It looked amazing. A basic terrarium with an assortment of plants is a very pleasant project to work on but if you put a little bit of creative thought into your terrarium making you can make something that really stands out and makes people say wow! What Does a 13 Year Old Know Anyway; Online Think Tanks and Teens Considered

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

By Lance Winslow As the coordinator for an Online Think Tank it is fascinating the different types of people who apply to join. Recruitment is never an issue, more screening is. There maybe only 2% of our population who think, but they are a strong lot, with some very inquisitive minds. Now the question; What Does a 13 year old know anyway? Should an Online Think Tanks allow Teens to be considered as potential candidates? Well, my answer is YES! Yes, that is a YES in big letters. Why? Well it is like a couple of people mentioned in Davos 2007 Conference. They said if we are going to upgrade the Internet to Web 2.0 then we had better start talking to 13 year olds and they were not kidding. Neither am I. So, the other day when we were contacted by a bright thirteen year old, I replied by email; Glad to make your acquaintance and indeed it is essential that you maintain your quest for knowledge in Middle School. We will need the next generation of up and coming superstars, as our Nation’s Future depends on it. I hope your parents are proud of your efforts and quest. Since you like to voice your opinion, I would suppose you have a Blog of some type or are considering perhaps making one that we might read? It is amazing the number of Blogs on the Internet isn’t it? I cannot believe how fast they are growing these days. Since I have you here online, maybe I could also ask you a question about the types of Personal Tech Items that you believe will come about in the Future; Like iPod Video Cellphones and such. At the Online Think Tank we often talk about such things, but what really drives the Techy World is what consumers and early adopters (teens definitely are) want. So, tell me what concerns do you have for the future? What things would you like to fix in your own school, town, state or for our Nation or the World? Obviously you have observed enough to consider some of the things that are not correct and need fixing? Do you have any ideas to fix things? You see our next generation is very interested in the future and they are ready to Rock! I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple; to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. I thank you for reading my many articles on diverse subjects, which interest you. “Lance Winslow” - If you have innovative thoughts and unique perspectives, come think with Lance; http://www.WorldThinkTank.net/. Super Easy Student Loan Refinance & Consolidation

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dorene_Patterson]Dorene Patterson Whether you are a student still in school or a new graduate facing a whole new life, one thing most of you have in common are the student loans you or your family took on to put you through college. For those of you still in school the sooner you prepare yourselves for how you will pay for your loans after graduation and understanding what your options are, the better prepared you will be to take appropriate action before you get in over your head. Securing a good job paying enough to cover your living expenses and your student loans doesn’t always happen as quickly as most graduates had hoped. For new graduates with student loan grace periods due to expire, the thoughts of a student loan refinance or consolidation may be whirling inside your head - “Should I refinance my student loans? Where do I start? Who do I contact and which option is best..? Whatever your circumstances may be, there are things you can do to make a student loan refinance much easier. The following answers to the most common questions will help get you started. What should I do first? 1) Find out what kind and how many loans you presently have. To do so you can either review your loan documents, contact your the lenders of each student loan, or you can obtain the information online by visiting the US Department Of Education National Student Loan Data System - (NSLDS) They allow you access to information on loan amounts and the status of your student loans. 2) Find out the “Grace Period” of each of your student loans so you know exactly how much and when your first payment is due for each loan. 3) Figure out your finances ahead of time, before you attempt to file for a student loan refinance. You must first determine whether your monthly loan payments exceed the amount you have set aside to pay your student debts with so you know up front what you can comfortably afford to do next. Is a student loan refinance right for me? If you’re a new graduate, in most cases refinancing your student loans before all the payments come due is the best choice to make especially if securing your finances with a high paying job may not happen right away. A student loan refinance can save you hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars before you ever start paying for all your loans. Waiting till your in financial distress is not the way to approach this situation. Student loan refinancing is only available to students and graduates who have never been late on their student loan payments or pay them on time.Once you’re in default on a loan payment the chance of obtaining a student loan refinance is slim at best. The only time a you should hesitate to refinance is if your present loans are close to being paid off. The one set back to refinancing student loans is the fact that it extends the time till the loan is paid off. Sometimes as long as 15 to 20 years! While it’s true choosing the student loan refinance option will give you extra money that you may need now, it may not be worth it in the long run if you are close to paying off the loans you have. Once you have gone through this checklist you’ll be ready to apply for a student loan refinance easily. With all your information you need to begin in hand, you can now proceed to choosing a lender Who do I contact? The best place to start is with your current lender as they already have your information to begin a student loan refinance for you right away. Remember, the deadline for locking in the lowest rate you will be able to get for some time to come is June 30th, 2006. The interest rate hike the US Senate put into place takes effect the following day on July 1st. Turban Power in the Turkish Nation

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Jim Masters Muslim or Turkish first? My Pal Jerry messaged me the other day asking if I had any comments about the NY Times article of November 28, 2006 entitled ‘Allure of Islam Signals a Shift Within Turkey’ by Sabrina Tavernise. So I read Ms. Tavernise’s article at the NY Times Website and (overlooking a few strong differences I had with what she wrote, such as her citation of the useless Pew Report from earlier this year — as if it were in any way authoritative), I thought she made an informative addition to the dialogue on ‘religious attitudes’ in Turkey. A pivotal point of Ms. Tavernise’s article — that ‘Turks who identify themselves by their religion has increased to 45 percent this year, from 36 percent in 1999′ — was drawn from the findings of a new ‘religious attitudes’ survey prepared by The Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation (Trkiye Ekonomik ve Sosyal Etdler Vakfı — TESEV). The TESEV survey, entitled ‘Religion, Society and Politics in the Changing Turkey’ (Degisen Trkiye’de Din Toplum ve Siyaset) had been reported in Hrriyet Gazetesi six days before Ms. Taverline’s dateline — and it contained some other interesting and revealing discoveries… 51% of those polled this year believe that the wife of the next Turkish President should not wear a religiously-symbolic turban in public. (Since the most likely candidate for the Presidency in May 2007 is the current Prime Minister and AKP religious-right party-leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan [whose wife always wears a turban in public -- see photo via our page link below], that 51% majority is a little on the thin side for those who favor a secular state in Turkey…) 8% of those who currently shun religiously-symbolic headcoverings said, ‘If everyone around me starts to wear a headcovering, I’ll have to follow suit.’ In a similar TESEV poll taken in 1999, 36 percent said they were ‘Religious (Muslim) first’ compared to 21 percent who said they were ‘Turkish first.’ In this year’s poll, those declaring themselves ‘Religious (Muslim) first’ have increased to 45 percent — the percentage of those in the ‘Turkish first’ category has declined to just 19%. This year’s study tries to downplay the above-noted increase in religious identity among Turks — saying that it doesn’t indicate a desire for an Islamic State. According to the study, the desire for ‘a Shariah-based (Islamic law) Religious State’ has dropped significantly from 21 percent to 9 percent since 1999. Even among strong religious-right conservative AKP supporters, those who desire an Islamic State amount to less than 14% — which is only about 4.2% of the total Turkish population. To further support the pro-secular sentiment, let’s not forget the recent poll (reported in Gzc Gazetesi during November 2006) that indicates a drop in voter support for the religious-right AKP from 36% (when they won the national election in November 2002) to 25% as we enter the next national election year in 2007. Dr. Can Paker, Director of TESEV, admits to the public perception that the number of headcovering (trbanli) females has increased since 1999, but he insists that the real number has actually decreased. Dr. Paker says that, ‘As incomes have increased the number of trbanli headcoverers has decreased (from 16 to 11%). The incorrect public perception arises because headcoverers — who used to stay at home — are now coming out in public due to their increased affluence.’ The most worrisome aspect of the report from Dr. Paker’s viewpoint is that a “them and us” attitude is developing within Turkish society — which has mushroomed since the AKP religious-right government came to power in 2003. To support Dr. Paker’s view, 71% of those polled in 2006 thought that too much friction exists between religionists and secularists. That’s up from 50% in 1999. Will this religion-rooted turmoil ever end in Turkey? It’s not likely –unless and until Turks can do a better job of separating religion and politics…assuming, of course, that they truly have the desire to do so.The jury is still (way) out on that one. So You’re Thinking of Changing Careers

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Yvonne Brown “You don’t have to take life the way it comes to you. By converting your dreams into goals, and your goals into plans, you can design your life to come to you the way you want it. You can live your life on purpose, instead of by chance. ~ Whatever it takes” - The Goal How many careers would you say you have had to date? One, two, more? Our parent’s generation seldom considered changing careers. The career model for their time was to join a company, work your way up with the help of promotions and retire with a great pension. At the retirement party they would hopefully give you a gold watch and a party and you would be on your way. Changing careers was not even on the radar screen for most professionals. Today it’s seen as a potential issue if a professional has not changed careers at least once. By changed careers I mean moving from one field to another or moving to different positions within a field. For instance, programmers may transition to technical leads and technical leads to project managers or system architects. This is a fairly standard practice in the developer track of Information Technology but should be a planned transition if it is to be a successful one. Quite often however, when considering a career change the responsibilities of the new position are an unknown quantity. There are several methods currently used by corporations that enable employees to “try on” a position before making the career change. For example, you can “shadow” someone who works in the field you wish to move to thus enabling you to see what a typical day or week is like in that job. Sometimes you find on closer inspection that the job is nothing like you thought or the requirements are such that further education or longer work hours are required. Job shadowing allows you to experience advance what the job is really like without having to give up your current position. Indeed, this style of “checking out” a career first is a good idea if you are not quite sure which position is right for you. Sometimes additional training is required for the career move and it behooves the person making the change to do a thorough investigation prior to executing the investment of time and money. Your company may be prepared to pay for your training since your improved skills will benefit you both. In order for the company to remain competitive in the marketplace they also need staff with up to date skills. Similarly, benefits like additional training cuts down on attrition, which can be very costly. Another alternative is to seek out a mentor who already works in the field of interest, and spark a conversation to determine the personality characteristics required for the position. For example, a developer who is considering moving to call center work may find that interaction with the public in a customer service role is not compatible with their personality. Whereas a continued role in the development area, moving to architect of a software module for instance more naturally suits their personality and style of working. Each individual must find their own motivation and determine whether the desire to change careers is based on sound reasoning. Among other things, you need to verify whether you are in the wrong career or if the motivation to change careers is based solely on monetary compensation or because something is amiss in your personal life. Prior to executing a career change I suggest that you put together a list of your career expectations. For instance, if you could have any job you want, what would it be? Ask yourself these questions: - What would it provide you with? - What kind of tasks would you perform? - What size organization do you want to work in? - Do you want to be a big fish in a little pond? Or a little fish in a big pond? - What type of people do you enjoy working with? - How dynamic of an environment do you like? - Do you prefer to work on the bleeding edge or the leading edge of the field? - Would you prefer business analysis where you interact with the functional users, or systems analysis where you remain more technical? - Would you prefer working with Global systems or local systems? Create a list of things you really enjoy about your current career. If you have difficulty filling the list, it may indeed be time for a career change. Put together a list of things you would like to do where your needs are currently unmet in your current position. Look around your present company to see what position could provide you with more job satisfaction. Then go through the process again to see if the job is what you think it is. I am reminded of the attorney who worked hard to pass the bar exam, worked his butt off to make partner, then one day found himself asking “is that all there is?” And, “why am I so unhappy with this work?” Thousands of dollars later, he and his counselor realized that he was an attorney because all the men in his family had been attorneys. What he really wanted to do, was work with children. He made a drastic career change, began working with children, and found that he was much happier. While his income was not at the same level as previously, he experienced a tremendous feeling of accomplishment. Career change can be a daunting and yet very rewarding process. Rewarding because you are challenged and excited about learning and using new skills and abilities. Daunting because you may have to begin at an entry-level position and have to work your way back to your present level of expertise. I remember once when a new hardware platform entered the marketplace and I wanted to get my hands on that system more that anything. I took a 25% pay cut to get on the new system and learn it, but a year later, I had almost doubled my salary. I took the 25% cut in pay because the skills required for the new system were scarce and the market was paying premium wages for the new skills. One thing’s for sure, if you want to change careers, you must make a plan and work it. Like anything else, you will need to set goals, do your research and follow the steps to achievement of your goals. You must: - Plan your mission. What career do you wish to enter or move to? - Visualize and articulate your career goal. - Plan the steps necessary to reach the certifications and skills required. - Set personal deadlines for achievement of your new career goal. - Benchmark progress along the way. Remember that preparation always precedes success. Failure to plan is planning to fail. According to Tom Peters, today’s employee will go through at least 3 career changes in their lifetime. Perhaps now is the time for one of your career changes. One avenue might be, when a new project is being launched, make sure you get on the team. In today’s world changes occur rapidly and in order for those you to remain successful you must constantly upgrade your skills and bring them in line with the new technology and this new economy. In summary, to benefit from a successful career change, your have to set goals, measure your progress towards those goals, make adjustments as necessary, and work your plan, to achieve a smooth transition to your new career. Food is sometimes a drug for some people. If we eat too much we can become addicted to it. This will cause us to gain weight. It is hard to understand why some people have addictions to food, but it is real. These people have to have medical treatment to help them get back to a better eating habit so that they can start losing weight and start to feel great again. So if you want to loss weight successfully, do try your best to kick off such bad habits. The challenges of losing weight do not have to get us down. Help in Choosing Live Music for Your Wedding Day

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

By Renae Judkins One of the toughest choices a bride must make is that of her wedding music. The music at an event can shape the entire evening and set the mood from beginning to end. However, so many wedding quartets and bands exist now that a bride doesnt even know where to start looking. Will the band show up? Are they any good? Can I hear some samples? These are questions that brides are left wondering even after they book that string quartet for the ceremony music. We talked to Chandler Judkins with Las Vegas Wedding Music, the number one musician contracting company in the wedding capital of the world to find out how a brides music jitters can be put at ease. First, Chandler Judkins says, find a contractor instead of trusting your wedding coordinator. This might outrage some wedding coordinators who make a living at planning weddings. However, Judkins says that unless a coordinator has graduated in a music program at a university or is using a musician contractor themselves to get a string quartet or jazz band, then dont listen to their opinions on what is a magical wedding band. Just like a bride takes such care to match everything to the colors of her wedding, a musician contractor matches the music to her colors as well, Judkins said. Las Vegas Wedding Music has over 200 professional musicians ready to be contracted for Las Vegas weddings. Any good musician contractor should have the same, Judkins said. If a bride hires a professional musician contractor, all her questions are answered with ease. Overweight - Answering Your Critics

Friday, November 16th, 2007

By Trevor Johnson There are those that walk amongst us who have followed all the advice, diligently dieted and exercised with genuine effort for long periods of time, yet still fail to lose their excess weight. Even more heartbreaking for those of us who genuinely struggle with obesity are the accusations of sloth and laziness from those thin people who eat junk all day long and show no physical sign of their own gluttony. “Why can’t you just be like everyone else?”, they demand. “It must be all your own fault.” “After all,” they say in derisory voice, “Losing weight is easy. Just eat less and exercise more. If you don’t lose weight, you are just weak willed.” Every person who has never had a real problem thinks they know all the easy answers. All those underlying unwarranted generalisations we face from others just about every day of our lives is a little recognised yet very real and severe form of discrimination, based on the same types of wrong thinking as prejudice against race, skin color, creed, gender, and other well recognised forms of hatred. In fact, life experience has taught me that the less a person actually knows about obesity and weight loss, the more they think they know. I spent time a few years ago under the care of some of the most distinguished and knowledgable internationally renowned Professors researching weight loss and obesity from the University of Sydney and the Royal Prince Albert Hospital’s Obesity Clinic in Sydney, Australia. I will always remember what Professor Ian Caterson told me one day: “The more we learn about obesity, the more we realise how little we really understand and how much more there is to discover.” Would any of those permanently thin critics care to explain a man with whom I shared many physiotherapy and hydrotherapy sessions during my time on the program at the Obesity Clinic? He was normal down the left side of his body, though obese down the right side of his body only. Next time someone verbally berates you for carrying excess body weight and tries to tell you how easy it is to be lean & trim, try asking them what they would recommend to that man that some of the top obesity researchers in the world don’t yet know. Then, while your critic is looking dumbfounded and fumbling for some feeble explanation, hit them with a few more questions, such as: Why do large birth weight babies have a dramatically higher rate of obesity than normal birth weight babies? And, given the above, just what control do you think I’ve got over my birth weight? Do you know what your metabolic rate is? If not, why do you presume to think you know mine? Do you think everyone has identical norepinephrine levels? Oh, you don’t even know what norepinephrine is, huh? Why do some people gain weight during stressful times while other people loss weight, irrespective of their eating patterns? How do you expect an overweight person to even be capable of greater physical activity than a normal weight person? Name me five minerals (not vitamins) that are vital for hormonal function, and explain which of these hormones has a different effect on brain signals related to appetite and metabolism. Tell me what you know about Insulin Resistance Syndrome, what causes it, what its symptoms are, and how to treat it. What has the least nutrient value to the human body - (a) 100 calories of pure fat, (b) 100 calories of pure protein, or (c) 100 calories of pure carbohydrate? (By the way - Your critic will probably answer Fat. The correct answer is C. The human body actually requires fats and proteins for various metabolic and physiological functions. Pure carbohydrate has no known unique use in the human body as the body can convert either fats or proteins as required into blood glucose, as it does with carbohydrate.) Some of the most successful business people, scientists, philosophers and artists in the course of human history have struggled with obesity. Why do you think such successful and influential people who have changed the course of the world as we know it today are “weak willed”? When you see the jaw of your critic drop to the floor, as they turn pale and look like they’ve been hit by a runaway train, when their silence shows that their ignorance and prejudice has been thoroughly exposed, just calmly walk away. At this point, both of you now know that, even though you may carrying excessive body weight, it is your critic who has the bigger problem.
