6 Secret Library Sources Most Amateur Genealogists Miss

June 22nd, 2008 by ingerbrasington

By Chris Simeral Much as we may like to sit in the comfort of our own home and conduct genealogy research online, if youve spent anytime at all looking into your familys past, you probably know that at some stage in your research you’ll need to use a library (no one said playing detective was easy). And if you really want to take your research to the next level, the library that will be the most valuable to you is the one in your ancestors hometown. If you’re lucky enough to live in the same county where your family has lived for several generations, youre a step ahead of the game. With a short trip, you’ll be able to access the records that your ancestors generated as they lived their daily lives. If you dont live in the area, you may want to make plans to take a trip and spend several days if you want to get serious about your research. Go to the library in the closest city or town where your family lived, and ask whether they have a genealogy section. Even if they dont, they will have a local history section. In the genealogy section, you’ll find individual published family histories, and much more published material that’s related to families who lived in the region. In the local history section, you’ll find books, leaflets, scrapbooks, photographs, manuscripts, and other local material that has been acquired by the library, usually by donation. A Wealth of Information at Your Fingertips Before you set off for your library visit, collect all the factual information you have on those family members who lived in the area: their names, the dates of their births, marriages and death. At the library, you’re looking for records of the events in your ancestors’ lives. For example, if you can find out what church they attended, you can later try to locate the church records that were generated. Yes, it may occasionally feel as if you’re searching for a needle in a haystack, but be persistent. If your family lived in the area, they generated records, and you’ll find them. Each additional snippet of information will lead you to more, and you’ll become more experienced in searching as well. Here are six sources of information most libraries will have that can be invaluable to the amateur genealogist sources that many beginners dont even know exist: First settlers’ records and memorabilia: Historical societies in many counties work to collect information on the early settlers to an area. You’re likely to find anything from book manuscripts to maps, to taped interviews in this section. Look for any mention of your ancestors’ names. If you dont find anything, note down the names of the people who created the information, or the names of the officers of the historical society. If you contact them, they may be able to help you. Obituary and necrology indices: Many libraries have collections of old obituaries. Look through these for any mention of your ancestors’ names. County histories and indices: Every county has a county history published in the late 19th century or early 20th century, and some have several; they were very popular in that era. They contain the histories of the towns and cities in the county, with photographs or drawings of the early settlers. You may find photos of your ancestors, with short biographies. Check with the librarian whether indices have been created of the information, because these histories didnt normally include them when they were first prepared. If there’s no index, you’ll be spending considerable time looking through the pages for your ancestors’ names. Scrapbooks: Scrapbooking has recently experienced a resurgence, and it was a popular pastime early in the 20th century as well. You may be lucky enough to find a scrapbook with an article about an ancestor. Voting registers: Your library may have published voting registers, and these contain a lot of information it was written down so that people could be identified. You’ll find information like age, physical description including color of hair and eyes, address, occupation, and country of birth. There could even be more information, depending on where and when the register was created. City directories: Many cities have directories, some dating from the early 19th century. In city directories look for your ancestors’ names, their occupations, other people who lived at your ancestors’ address, and the first time your ancestor was listed this proves that he was a recent arrival in the area. Long Hair Styling Techniques

June 19th, 2008 by ingerbrasington

By Sarah Freeland Long hair takes a lot of maintenance in order to keep it looking healthy and shiny. Proper hair care is the first step that you will need to take in order to create beautiful long hair styles. Proper hair care starts with a quality shampoo and condition. These products should not be too heavy as heavy shampoos and conditions can be difficult to rinse out of long hair, especially if you have thick hair as well. In addition to using a good shampoo and conditioner you will also need to use hair care products that address the type of hair that you have. If you have curly or wavy hair then you may also want to use a curl enhancer and definer. If you are trying for a straight hair style then you may want to add a hair straightener to your hair care regime. If you plan on attending a special event then you will want to look for formal long hair styles that are appropriate for your face shape and the type of function that you will be attending. For weddings or spring formal events long spiral curls tied back, swept up, or left loose are all appropriate longer hair styles. If you have naturally straight hair then you may need to get a spiral perm in order to create the types of curls that you want. Long hair is beautiful and it can be styled into a number of looks. Unfortunately it can also create fashion problems. First if it is not cared for it can become frizzy, dry and dull. When this happens your long hair will weigh you down and make you look dowdy. To avoid these problems you should get a hair cut that will give your long hair shape, movement and texture. One type of hair cut that works great for long hair are layered hair cuts. White Sun - Reincarnation & Liberation

June 15th, 2008 by ingerbrasington

By Teow Aun Chew Deep inside us, we actually know about reincarnation but we have forgotten. It is similar to certain thing that we have long accepted in the past but have to deny it due to our present spiritual path. Ignorance means a lack of true understanding of the Truth and a long time ago we came to this world due to the so-called Initial Ignorance. Because of this initial ignorance, we have misunderstood the meaning of life and failed to see the true picture of the world. The word reincarnation comprised of two parts. Re means again and incarnation means being born to this world in a new body or become another being again. This explains having to come back to this world again. In some languages, the idea of reincarnation is indirectly implied for example in English when a person died, we say he or she had passed away to avoid using the word die bluntly. There must be something in us that had passed away leaving this physical body. What actually can pass away because the physical body is left on this earth after death? If we insist that there is no such thing as the soul, then what can pass away? Chinese too dislike using the word die. Taiwanese prefer to use the word guo shen meaning some one has died or left the body. This clearly explains that something inside us leaves this body and seeks a new body to reside in. It is the part of us called the true self (soul) that has to depart from the false self (body) at the end of this life and passes to the next existence in another body. The true self is intangible, cannot be seen, touched, destroyed, not born and is eternal. After death, we are no more a living human being, but a dead body or a ‘corpse’ but the true self lives on. Living beings are supple and able to move freely while alive but dead bodies turn stiff shortly after death. To move a corpse we dont need three or four persons but just two persons, one at the head and the other at the feet to carry it up and move it like a log. When the true self leaves the body, the heart stops, the body becomes a dead body and the person is considered dead. The Chinese word ren meaning human being comprised of two slanting strokes supporting each other, one long stroke on the left representing the soul and one short stroke on the right representing the body. When the long stroke leaves the short stroke, then the short stroke cannot support itself and it (body) dies and falls down. The long stroke goes somewhere and finds another short stroke to start another life and the short stroke will be buried six feet underground. Scientifically in chemistry we know that our bodies are composed of various molecules, including oxygen, hydrogen, carbon and some minor molecules. Where did these molecules come from? From our parents but spiritually, where were these molecules 100 years ago or 1,000 years ago? Where will these molecules be after 100 years or 1,000 years from now? All of them have to travel in a cyclic way and there were cycles in the past, and there will be cycles in the future. They just change places and combinations but they do not perish. In other words, these molecules can be used again and again just like recycled paper. If we can accept that inside us is a true self that does not perish and it survives the death of this physical body, then many sentient beings might dwell on it in the same way at different times. These sentient beings are our ideas and thoughts, they come and go and they emerge in our mind whether we like it or not and fake away in a similar way later. We dont seem to have any effective control of them and time is the most important factor. Speaking about time, we have seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, years, decades and so on. We divide time into smaller segments according to our measurements or needs. A second can be long for people anxiously waiting for very important news or struggling for survival. A day or year passes like lightning for many of us. Living a life now in the 21st century, we have forgotten our lives thousands of years ago. Many people wish to live their lives in the same environment similar to those ancient people or their ancestors just two or three generations ago. People then lived a simple life, riding horses and in peace with nature without having to worry much about the killings and wars of the modern days. Unfortunately this is the 21st century and we cannot turn back the previous time. We have no choice and most people identify themselves as the physical body and thus spend most of the time answering to its needs which is only temporary. If we cannot accept the concept of our inner world, what we do is merely recycling heaps of various molecules in and around us. In the end, we have to leave without taking anything with us, not even a molecule or an atom. This is the advice from my Heavenly Teacher JiGong: Undergoing the difference of time and space, words that one utters at the current level of awareness may have changed in half a year. But still, the voice of the heart right at this moment must be expressed outward. Then only can it be converted into energy and be digested (dissolved and transformed). In dealing with all matters, one must turn the light inwardly to find flaws with oneself (self-checked). Then only can one discern everything clearly when encountering devilish trials in the course of breaking through the spiritual tests. How to liberate oneself? One must start with a firm cultivation on ones body, tongue and intent (actions, words and thoughts). Root out all bad habits and behavior while calm and quiet the moving mind (agitated heart) through firm cultivation. Be able to endure disgrace, be forgiving and be large-minded. Submit meekly to all unfavorable situations and conditions to let your wisdom increase and grow. Have consideration for others at all times and naturally you will live transcendently and happily. Author: T.A Chew T.A Chew had gone through great sufferings and was told by Goddess of Mercy in 1998 that he had to learn life through his own sufferings. In this manner only he can guide people later on about how to liberate and stop the cycle of birth and death so as to end the sufferings. Career Choices for Consulting Super Stars

June 7th, 2008 by ingerbrasington

By Gary Preston The consulting world has changed dramatically over the last 20 years and with it have the career options open to the best consultants. In the 1980s and early 1990s, the brightest consultants joined one of a handful of elite strategy firms. They stayed loyal to the firm, were sponsored to do an MBA at an Ivy league business school, and if they stuck at it and made the grade, they would be rewarded handsomely by being promoted to Partner. Then in the late 1990s, dotcom mania struck. Many of the best consultants failed to return after their MBA or left the firm to join hi-tech start-ups, hoping to build and float companies with new paradigm business models. The most memorable example in the UK was the founding of the travel company, Lastminute.com. Famously, Brent Hoberman was a Senior Associate at Spectrum Strategy when he met Martha Lane Fox and jointly founded Lastminute.com in 1998. With the crashing of the internet bubble from 2000 and with the consulting downturn in mainstream corporate consulting lasting until 2004, consultants faced difficult career choices. Many consultants decided that with so little real job security in consulting they were better off eschewing the traditional consulting career ladder and working as freelance associates. This gave them life-work flexibility as well as the ability to focus on areas of consulting that they were genuinely interested in. It also enabled them to gain valuable line-management experience to complement their consulting skills. Many of the top consulting firms de-risked their business by increasing the proportion of associate staff to permanent staff. They found that with so many good consultants on the bench , it was possible to supplement their permanent consulting resources as required to meet demand surges. With a large pool of freelance associates it has also been possible for these firms to pin-point their staffing so that they get a sector or skills expert on their team as required. Outside of consulting, the business area to be most favourable to the brightest consultants was private-equity. Many of the largest private equity firms which had begun life as funding business startups, switched to performing major management buy-outs where they could achieve much more predictable revenue streams. With such low interest rates, and so many European business crying out for restructuring, money poured into buy-out funds. One of the key reasons why businesses were taken private was to undertake the complicated corporate surgery by industry experts, which might not be understood or welcomed by a broad shareholder base. To make post-acquisition improvements private equity firms need strategy consultants’ analytical rigour combined with operational and sector experience. As well as relying on trusted consulting firms to assess deals and create strategies, they have looked for key individuals who they can work with over a long period to deliver tangible business performance improvements. Consulting companies with their linear structure, low level of operational experience, and requirement to sell big-teams, often are not suited to the implementation needs of the private equity world. Hence the need for skilled associate staff who have the management consultant s training and the business executives experience. With the consulting market picking up from 2004, many consulting firms have been re-hiring aggressively. However for many of the brightest consultants today, the choice is not which firm to join but whether to join a firm or to work an associate basis. Mindbench was founded to fulfill an un-met need in the management consulting sector - the need for fast access to high quality specialist consultants for particular project requirements. Organic vs. Inorganic Fertilizer

June 1st, 2008 by ingerbrasington

By John Douglas Central to the science of agronomy is the topic of increasing crop yields and growing healthy plants that provide high nutritional value. While the debate will continue between organic and inorganic fertilizers one fact is clear. When it comes to feeding a hungry world inorganic fertilizers are unsurpassed in their ability to provide high levels of nutrients to plants in an efficient and economical manner. Understanding their differences helps us all to understand their appropriate uses. Plants fed a strict diet of organic fertilizers are not necessarily healthier to eat than plants fed conventional or manufactured fertilizers. The nutritional quality of food is controlled by the amount and proportional balance of the nutrients fed to the plant, not by the source of the nutrient. Fertilizers are made of organic or inorganic materials produced from natural or synthetic origins that are added to plant systems in order to supply one or more nutrients required for the plants healthy growth. Fertilizers produced from organic materials contain carbon and either one or more of the essential plant nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Animal manures, composts, sewage sludge and by-products from processed animal and vegetable materials are the most common organic fertilizers. On the other hand carbon is not normally a component in the basic chemical structure of inorganic fertilizers. Usually referred to as manufactured, commercial, synthetic or mineral, inorganic fertilizers are produced from the naturally occurring substances of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Nitrogen (N), the most used nutrient in plants, comprises about 78% of the atmosphere. To produce nitrogen for fertilizers air is combined with methane from natural gas, and, under pressure and temperature, is converted to anhydrous ammonia which is the basis for most nitrogen fertilizers. The fossilized remains of marine life deposited in the earth is the primary source of phosphorus (P), the second most used of the primary plant macro-nutrients, N P and K. Its conversion to usable form by the plant mimics natural processes occurring in the soil. Evaporated oceans are the primary source of the salts from which potassium (K) is produced. The primary difference between organic and inorganic fertilizers is the nutrient content. Organic fertilizers contain small concentrations of plant nutrients which means they must be applied at high rates in order to provide the nutrient needs of plants. While it does contain nutrients, manures nutrient levels vary greatly from load to load. Nutrients in manure usually are not readily usable to the plants and are not properly balanced to provide all the nutrient needs the plant requires. Inorganic fertilizers on the other hand can be applied to the exact levels or nutrients required by the plants. Transportation costs for manure are relatively high because its nutrient content is relatively low so it is not economical for farm producers to move manure more than a few mile from the feedlot. Large amounts of organic fertilizers must be applied in order to meet the needs of the growing plants. A 50 pound bag of inorganic fertilizer is roughly equivalent to one ton of feedlot manure. In addition, applying excessive manure can create an environmental liability rather than a nutrient source. Without the use of inorganic fertilizers farmers could not produce enough food to feed the world. The use of fertilizers accounts for an estimated 30-50% of crop yields in the U.S. Higher yields are common in developing areas of the world through the use of inorganic fertilizers. Still, crops use and remove more nutrients from the soil than we return with fertilizers. It is a necessity to utilize inorganic fertilizers to replace the nutrients taken from the soil during crop growth. The use of inorganic fertilizers produces higher crop yields and higher yields mean more feed available for a hungry world. We all need to have access to healthy, nutritious foods. Agronomy is the science of crop production, plant physiology and growing healthy plants that provide high nutritional value. Bamboo Fly Rods - A Timeless Tradition

May 29th, 2008 by ingerbrasington

By Margarette Tustle You have probably seen or used bamboo fly rods if you know a fly-fisherman or if you are a fly- fisherman. In a throw-back to a simpler time, bamboo fly rods are still just as popular today as they were a hundred years ago. You can find brand new ones online or beautiful antique models on the popular antique show on public television. With all of the new and just as durable materials on the market like fiberglass, graphite, and others, why would someone want one of the simple bamboo fly rods? The answer probably lies somewhere between tradition and quality. Understanding Fly Fishing Before you understand fly rods, you will need to have an understanding of fly-fishing. Fly-fishing is done by waving the rod back and forth smoothly through the air and then letting the line out at just the right moment for gravity and force to cast it out into the water at the perfect spot. Bamboo fly rods must be flexible, lightweight, and have a sensitive touch-this is what they make them perfect. Bamboo rods have been around for almost as long as fishing has been around. If you do an online search you can find not only information about bamboo fly rods, but how to care for them, how to make them, where to buy them, and you can even find antique rods for sale-some that were made before the first World War. The antique rods are not usually for use, but they would be a treasured part of any serious fly-fishermans collection. How To Find Bamboo Rods If you want to make your own bamboo fly rods there are several places that you can purchase the different pieces that you will need including the line guides, the pole pieces, the ferrules (the metal caps on the ends of the each pole piece that act as connectors), the cork grips and the reel as well. You should take special care when choosing a finish. The finish on bamboo fly rods should be durable and flexible and should withstand water damage. Once you have the parts, you can find instructions for putting it together in one of the many books or websites available online. But, if the do-it-yourself route is not your style, you can purchase bamboo fly rods online. There are models that range from a simple pole with a hook on the end for as little as five dollars-and there are deluxe models with all of the bells and whistles that can run several hundred dollars. Some people might want to take an old rod and refinish it. While this can be a fun and rewarding activity, it may cost more to restore some rods than they are worth especially if they are cracked. Caring For Your Fly Rod Caring for bamboo fly rods takes time and precision. If they are not cared for properly they will quickly decay and rot. Clean and dry the wood after each use and use furniture polish occasionally. The ferrules should also be kept free of debris and can be cleaned with denatured alcohol, Vaseline, or lighter fluid. The cork grips can be cleaned with toothpaste and a soft brush or dish soap or a cleaner that has bleach in it. Be careful not to remove any small pieces of cork. As the cork begins to get old it should be replaced. Margarette Tustle writes ideas for home and family. Find bamboo resources at msbamboo.com. Perfect Lips

May 26th, 2008 by ingerbrasington

By Mina Dimakis-Lev Nothing impresses your friends more than a perfect lip line, because it is the hardest makeup application to do.To get it, avoid applying the lip pencil too heavily, which will be difficult to blend and soften into the lipstick. Keeping your mouth closed lightly trace the lip line with the lip pencil so it can barely be seen, but can be used as a guide line. Hold the brush horizontally to trace along the lip line, and do a little bit at a time, backing up and going over it again. Don’t try to get the whole line in one stroke. The best lip brush is a sable with a slightly tapered edge, not straight one. This provides more control and a cleaner line.If you are really pressed for time, apply lipstick only on the bottom lip and press your lips together. Then, blend out to the lip line with the edge of a lip brush, not the tip, for a precise line, or use a dampened cotton swab for a soft, natural lip line. When finished, instead of blotting the lips by biting a tissue, lay the tissue across both lips while your mouth is closed. This will imprint your lips, including the edges of the mouth where lipstick usually bleeds. Perfect! The Perfect Wedding Budget

May 17th, 2008 by ingerbrasington

By Whitney Acke Creating a wedding budget is one of the first things a bride should do. Although it is extremely important, brides often fear the task and in turn do not create one at all. This is a huge mistake. Brides who plan weddings without a wedding budget spend anywhere from twenty to fifty percent more than they anticipated. This can be a financial disaster for whoever is taking care of the wedding bill. So, be a responsible bride and use these helpful ideas to create your own personal wedding budget. Tips A good thing to remember is you can plan a beautiful wedding on any wedding budget. The most important thing to remember is to stick to your budget, no matter if you must forgo things you truly want to include. Will you really remember if you had to use cheap ribbon for your wedding favors instead of the designer ribbon you desired? Probably not, and it is certain your guests won’t know the difference anyway. A wedding that has a guest list of over 400 may need a professional wedding planner. However, if you feel capable of taking on the task yourself, then by all means, give it a try. If you start to feel too overwhelmed you can always call in for backup later. Breaking It Down A bride can take the total amount she plans to spend on her wedding and divide it for each planning category. This formula is great no matter what your total wedding cost goal may be however it is based upon a $5000 wedding budget. At any time, if you must spend more on one area than the other, then you will have to deduct allotted money from another area to compensate. Try keeping a journal of every purchase you make in order to fulfill you wedding plan successfully. Opening a specific bank account for wedding expenses is a great way to stay on track as well. Location Brides should set aside no more than ten percent of their total wedding budget for their wedding location rental. Brides who desire church weddings may find that it is sometimes free for them to use their family church. Other ways to save money are to hold your wedding at the home or garden of a friend or family member. Attire The bride should not spend more than twenty-five percent of their total budget on wedding attire. This includes attire for the bride, her attendants, the groom, and his attendants. A good way to cut down attire costs is to ask your attendants to help pay for their gowns and tuxedos. If you simply cannot ask them to help contribute, then you should choose lower costs gowns for them to wear. Reception A total of thirty percent of the total budget can be spent of the wedding reception. Couples usually spend more on the reception than the ceremony because they are entertaining their guests and the reception lasts a lot longer. Decorations Decorations can account for twenty-five percent of the total wedding budget. Brides must be very careful in this area, and be sure about their purchases before hand. Many brides waste money in this category simply because they change their minds about the dcor several times. A bride with a tight budget cannot afford to be unsure and should wait until they are certain before purchasing. Making your own wedding decorations is a great way to save money in this area. Using creative and easy decoration ideas, you can make your wedding look fabulous for much less. Extra It is a good idea to leave ten percent of your total budget for last minute details or unexpected costs along the way. This is a good way to save money in the case you might not stick strictly with your budget and need extra funds. Now that you know how important your wedding budget is to the success of your wedding, you can be motivated to stick to your plan. Sticking to your budget will not only free you financially but also give you the satisfaction of knowing you planned your ideal wedding by staying in your budget boundaries. What is the Main Cause of Depression for Men?

May 9th, 2008 by ingerbrasington

By Mike Stevens What is the main cause of depression for men? We know that men are much less likely to suffer from depression than women and for that reason, we often forget that men can suffer as well. Depression in men, although less common, is still a major problem. Some signs of depression in men are similar to those in women and include withdrawal from the outside world, disinterest in formerly enjoyable activities, thoughts of suicide and sleep problems. Other symptoms more exclusive to men may include reckless behaviour such as speeding, taking drugs or other dangerous activities. Men are also more likely to indulge in alcohol, overwork and casual sex to try and relieve the depression. Since depressed men are four times more likely to commit suicide, it’s vital that we recognize the signs of depression in men. Often a wife or girlfriend will be the first to realize that her husband is depressed. By taking action immediately, tragic results can be avoided. So, the question remains, what is the main cause of depression for men? The number of causes of depression in men is great, so it’s difficult to determine the main cause. Many men are taught from a very young age to be the rock, strong and independent, and they tend to feel the burden of providing for a family more than the woman. This over-developed sense of responsibility can lead to problems when a man loses his job or is incapacitated in some way. He is required to depend on others and can no longer support his family, making him feel useless and leading to depression. If you ask a group therapists what is the main cause of depression for men, you will probably get a different answer from each one. But the overall gist can be used to get the answer to the question “what is the main cause of depression for men?” Stress on the job and at home. When a man feels he isn’t measuring up to the standard of success he has set for himself or that others have set for him, he is likely to fall into a depression. When asking what is the main cause of depression for men one must also take into consideration that each man is different in what level of stress he can handle. Men with a history of alcohol or drug abuse are likely to become depressed quicker than a man who has a clean history. Those with a family or personal history of depression are also at higher risk. A supplement of ginkgo biloba or chamomile might also prove useful in easing the effects of stress on the average man, making him less susceptible to depression due to job or in the home stress and anxiety. Taking time to relax and enjoy life is another essential ingredient in the prevention of depression in men, as is the recognition of the signs of depression in men so that it can be treated early on. Men do not deal with depression in the same way as women and it must be remembered that each gender has unique manners of handling stress. Finding a treatment for the stress will most likely result in a prevention of depression later on.
